New! FireBox Pro for Triumph, Norton and BSA twins FB-0020

You've asked for it and now here it is! Programmable from your laptop PC, the FireBox Pro is a versatile ignition giving you the ultimate in performance from your Norton, Triumph or BSA engine. FB-0020

The advance curve can be set with 11 points by simply dragging the dots on the curve or by entering the values in the boxes. The rev limit is programmable along with the coil dwell time making it compatible with a wide variety of large and small ignition coils.

No wasted sparks unless you want them! This is a 2 channel box capable of firing both cylinders independently with enough flexibility to suit V-Twins, parallel twins or engines with modified crank angles.

What's different about it? The programmable settings for the advance curve, rev limit and engine parameters such as cam or crank triggering, electric or kick start, 2 or 4 stroke and number of cylinders allow you to tailor the operation to your specific requirements. We have supplied FireBox Pro kits for offset cranks, single cylinder speedway engines and supercharged Nortons to name a few.

The pickup unit fits easily under the stock covers while the control box hides under the seat or fuel tank or behind one of the side covers.

We can match this system up with some high powered ignition coils to get the best out of your high compression or supercharged engine. If you need a wasted spark installation ( for compatibility ) we can do that too.

The programming kit (software and cable) is sold separately. We can also supply the box preset to your requirements. Now you can have the performance you've been looking for from your classic racer or road bike!

New! Triple TRI-0002 - SD with Miniature Coils

New for this month is a special version of our popular triple ignition that is compatible with miniature coils.

The coils are small enough to fit under the tank in some installations. We first trialed this version on Gerry's Rob North featured in a previous story with great results. The bike revs out beautifully now and has covered several thousand miles - Gerry loves to ride this one!

What's different about it? We made it compatible with Gerry's existing miniature coils (Boyer ignition) supplied with the bike but extended the dwell time for higher spark energy.

Now available as a complete kit with Lucas miniature coils and our HT leads - look for the TRI-0002-SD

Please note that the TRI-0002 and TRI-0002-SD are not interchangeable

Bonneville Bike Blast - 152MPH!

Double Vision #901 built and ridden by Tyler Malinky of Low Brow Customs, shown here in a photo by Jon Glover, uses our Magneto Replacement kit on these 1955 pre unit Triumph motors.

Tyler wrote:
Hey Stephen, successful Bonneville Speed Week with my dual engine 1955 Triumph and your magneto replacement units and ignitions. I beat two records, previous were 128 which I upped to over 140mph, and 135 which I upped to 151.5. Top speed was 152.5mph. Flawless service from your ignitions.

Shown above is the drive line side and the ignition housings just behind the cylinders. The double output coils on the down tube power 2 sparks for each cylinder. More spark = more speed!

More about coils

We get asked about coils - a lot! Customers want to know which coils will work with their electronic ignitions and we are happy to help. Each kit has a particular combination of coils that will work best and we also have coils to suit the original contact breaker ignition. The following is a guide to get started:

Electronic Ignition
Engine       Ignition Kit        Tri-Spark Coils to suit
Unit Twin    TRI-0005         IGC-1006 (2 required)
Unit Twin    TRI-0005         IGC-2012 (1 required)
Unit Single  TRI-0005         IGC-1012 (1 required)
(Commando, BSA, A65, Triumph, T100, T120, T140, TR7RV, RE Interceptor many others)

Triple           TRI-0001         IGC-1006 (3 required)       (ballast required)
Triple           TRI-0001         IGC-1012 (3 required)       (recommended)
(T150 T160 Trident Rocket 3 Hurricane)

Points ignition only
All models with 12 volt electrics on points ignition use IGC-1012 except where a ballast resistor is fitted (for example late Norton and Triumph T160). If there is a ballast resistor use IGC-1006.

 Key specifications
IGC-1006 1.8 Ohm primary resistance
IGC-1012 3.5 Ohm primary resistance
IGC-2012 3.5 Ohm primary resistance

Desert Sled

The June 2012 issue of Classic Bike, which sells around the world, has a feature on a Triumph twin that runs our complete Tri-Spark system.
It's written by Australian motorcycle journalist Hamish Cooper. He bought a wreck of a 1966 Triumph Bonneville chopper from Murray's Britbikes, which stocks our electronic systems. Over 18 months he rebuilt this junker into a "desert sled" using period parts. But there were two areas he didn't cut corners on: the ignition and carburetion. Here's a extract from the feature:

To ensure clean running I got the Monobloc carbs resleeved and bought an entire ignition system (coils, rectifier, electronic ignition) from the Australian Tri-Spark company.....

..... After a few hours of running in around a farm property I took the Triumph to a Vinduro event and it performed faultlessly. It started easily and chugged from low revs, even with twin carbs. This proves that the decision to fit fully rebuilt carbs and a complete new ignition system was the right one.

Modern fuels often don’t agree with old British engines so you need every bit of help you can find.

Negative Earth (Ground) Q & A

Q- In a recent email Bill Dawson says "the ignition seems to be wired for positive earth with the ring terminal on the red wire going to the pillar bolt for the earth connection".

A- The ignition is wired for positive earth but it will work either way by changing the connections - the wiring diagrams are supplied in the kit for both positive and negative earth.

On this subject we often get asked if the voltage regulators will work for negative earth. The single phase and the three phase regulators are made so that the case is isolated from the internal connections so they can be used on positive or negative earth machines.

We also get the odd email asking if there are any advantages to converting the machine to negative earth. The idea is that this is more common and therefore the better way to go. I feel that keeping the wiring stock is probably the better way to go - that way anyone working on the bike in the future can follow the wiring diagrams in the manuals if they need to make repairs. Either way the machine will run just the same.

Triple Racing in Europe

Out in front is our customer Berni riding the x43 which is running second place in the German Historic x class racing. He has a number of Tri-Spark systems in his triples which he believes are the best in the world (we like to think so too!) and recently finished a Rob North which again has the Tri-Spark ignition. His Philosophy is to keep all the parts the same on his bikes so he can swap them around in case of an accident - sounds like a great idea!

Bonneville Phil

Phil likes to get around to bike shows like the Bombala Bike Show where his Bonneville won best British this year.

You wouldn't be alone if you were wondering where Bombala is - I'm guessing that would be somewhere near his home in Canberra here in Australia.

Phil adds that it does get ridden regularly and other riders watch with envy when his Tri-Spark powered machine fires up with one half-hearted kick.

We love to hear from our customers so keep those photos and stories coming in!

Magneto Replacement Kit

There was a great deal of interest in our new Magneto Replacement kit that we launched at the All British Rally. This kit includes an alloy housing for bolting the classic twin system onto the engine where a three bolt flange mount magneto would normally sit.

This is a 12 volt system that also includes a twin lead ignition coil with the electronic ignition.

Introductory pricing $549 Australian for the kit.

Triple Racing in Germany

This tidy Rob North T150 racer belongs to one of our German customers. He asked if we could make him a system with a unique advance curve based on his dyno tuning results for the dual plugged engine.
We said yes and not long after we sent it out the response came back that the engine starts and runs like never before.

High Output Alternator Kit

Great news for riders of older model Triumphs, BSAs or Nortons is the release of our new High Output Alternator Kits.

These kits are terrific and really do improve the charging systems on the old bikes dramatically. As always Steve has installed this kit on one of his bikes and says, “I put one on my T160 and noticed an improvement immediately.”

With the kit installed you can run both electronic ignition and a Halogen headlamp without worrying about battery charging. It includes a Lucas 3 phase alternator, 14 Amps output power and a Tri-Spark voltage regulator. It’s so easy to install Steve says he can confidently guarantee the fit! Just make sure you get the correct gap all the way around when you install the stator.

“The headlamp on my T160 stays bright even when the engine is idling which shows visually the excellent low RPM output of the 3 phase alternator,” Steve explains.

All British Rally 2011

Three years ago in 2008 we launched the 'Classic Twin' ignition system at the all British Rally in Campbells Creek Victoria.

This year we're back again at the new rally location in Newstead with more new products and promotions. We really enjoy this rally and love seeing our customers and their bikes. It's in it's 35rd year this time running from Friday the 8th of April to Sunday the 10th at the Newstead Racecourse in Newstead the event is sure to be a hit with motorcycling enthusiasts and visitors alike.

Now two weeks before the traditional Anzac day and Easter weekend and with expanded facilities, great local catering, extended pub hours and such a great site the organisers expect more than 1000 British bike enthusiasts.

Tri-Spark will be featuring 2 new products - Our High Output Alternator kit and a much asked for Magneto Replacement Kit. The latter may not be in full release mode but we will be displaying a prototype if not actual parts, and will definitely be taking orders.

Only British iron and tents are allowed on the main site but there is plenty of mixed camping around the track and the organisers confirm there will be the usual feast of exotica, entertainment, trophies and a great atmosphere.

Soaking up the unique "British only" atmosphere, catching up with old friends and making some new ones while viewing the huge range of veteran, vintage, classic and modern bikes will be fantastic as will seeing the latest industry and trade offerings.

Falcon Motorcycles Kestral

I would suspect that most people interested in modified Triumphs of the chopped of bobbed variety would have come across Falcon Motorcycles in their internet trawling. They came to prominence with the release of their pre-unit based Bullet and now they have backed it up with the Kestral.
To call the Kestral a modified Triumph doesn't do justice to the creativity and engineering prowess displayed in this bike. Nearly every part is built from scratch, the only remaining Triumph components are to be found in the headstock and around the engine and gearbox, but even there the barrels are built in-house.
See some construction and detail shots of this work of art here.
