We get asked all the time what makes our Tri-Spark Classic Twin ignition (for British Twins and singles) so different from the rest and I thought it was time to share that story with our customers and friends.

The problem we solved – when the engine is turning slowly and erratically during kickstarting and idling – the rotation of the crank can be difficult to predict – sparking at the wrong time can result in painful kickback, hard starting and lumpy running.

The solution – we use 2 position sensors – one dedicated for slow speed and one for normal running. By comparing the readings from these 2 sensors we get a much more detailed picture of what the engine is doing at low speed. Competitors can’t make this claim!

Wiring Woes

Breakdowns - nobody want to be stranded at the side of the road - how do avoid these troubles?

In my experience an electrical problem is more likely to end your ride than just about anything else. Some of these problems are unforeseen but a lot of times they can be avoided.

Here are 5 tips to help keep you going on your next ride.

  1. If the wiring loom has been patched a number of times consider replacing it. After 40 years the wires and connectors are just too old and crusty to do the job reliably anymore.
  2. Make secure wire joins. Avoid repairing wires midway with connectors.
  3. Leave enough slack for the wires to move around a bit without putting strain on the connections.
  4. Use good quality connectors and crimpers. Avoid the cheap sets of connectors at the auto parts stores. If you do have to use these preinsulated connectors remember to crimp the back end where the wire exits to support the wire.
  5. If you don't have the correct tools and experience to do the job...find an expert to give you a hand and get the job done right. Here in Adelaide there are a number of bike electricians I would happily recommend.

Southern Triples Rally Roundup



5th Southern Triples Rally 2017 Hahndorf (9-12 March 2017)

This year the ‘Southern Triples Rally’ for BSA Rocket Three and Triumph Trident riders was moved to South Australia at the request of several triple owners in SA. The previous four southern triples rallies were held in southern NSW to compliment the well-established and very popular northern NSW triples rallies organised by Col McAndrew in Ballina and now Evan’s Head.

So, it was that Gerry Rowley, Steve Cramp, Geoff Kemp and the Tri-Spark team got together to organise this Rally in the picturesque tourist town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide hills to promote the use and enjoyment of these machines.
Many of the thirty or so entrants travelled from as far as New South Wales, Canberra, Queensland and Perth to get there (it is nearly 1200Km from Canberra). The venue was the Hahndorf Resort just south of the village with its fantastic hills vistas and excellent amenities.
To kick things off we had a BBQ dinner in the camp kitchen, organised by Joanne Kelly. This was a very pleasant evening with balmy conditions and the casual surroundings were perfect for getting acquainted with fellow triplers.
The presentation dinner on Saturday evening was at the restaurant in the Resort where we enjoyed a great meal and some thirst quenching after a great day of riding. The award presentations followed the meal with some noteworthy outcomes. Ian and David Wright (Brothers) won awards for their beautifully restored early T150 and T160. Paul Edwards won the best special for his Legend. Steve Mobbs won the Best BSA Rocket 3. The heroic Tim Tapsell won the ‘furthest traveled award’, well deserved for riding his T160 to and from Sydney! The award for best Hurricane went to Steve Cramp while the award for best Drum Brake Trident went to Ian Matthews, both of South Australia. 

Many commented on the caliber of the bikes which are an absolute credit to their owner’s efforts to keep them up to this very high standard. Plans are already being discussed for a next triples rally event in Gunning NSW for 2018 and perhaps back to South Australia after that.

The advance curve can be set with 11 points by simply dragging the dots on the curve or by entering the values in the boxes. The rev limit is programmable along with the coil dwell time making it compatible with a wide variety of large and small ignition coils.

New for this month is a special version of our popular triple ignition that is compatible with miniature coils.

The coils are small enough to fit under the tank in some installations. We first trialed this version on Gerry's Rob North featured in a previous story with great results. The bike revs out beautifully now and has covered several thousand miles - Gerry loves to ride this one!


What's different about it? We made it compatible with Gerry's existing miniature coils (Boyer ignition) supplied with the bike but extended the dwell time for higher spark energy.

Aussie Triples Rally 2013 Winning BSA


Travelling 2,000 kilometres by motorcycle is a feat in itself but when the trip is completed on a classic bike then it makes the expedition even more courageous.  This is exactly what Gerry Rowley did in 2012 to attend the Triples Rally when he rode from the Gippsland area of Victoria to Ballina in the Northern Rivers region of NSW where the rally is held annually. He would have repeated the trip in 2013 too but due to various circumstances he ended up taking two bikes on a trailer along with a mate to ride the second one.
This year he brought his 1969 Rocket 3 and his 1969 Triumph Trident T150 to Ballina and both bikes are beauties. Gerry keeps them in tip top condition. Obviously everyone else who participated in the rally thought so too as he took home rally awards for both motorcycles including Best BSA 2013 for the Rocket and Best Drum Brake Trident for the T150.

Gerry says he’ll probably ride up for the 2014 rally because he knows that whichever bike he rides, it will cover the distance without a hitch. He’s that confident because he’s got Tri-Spark digital electronic ignition systems installed on both bikes. Whether he rides one of these bikes or his 1974 Norton Commando 850, which also has the Tri-Spark system installed, he knows he’ll get to his destination no matter how far away it is.

 So delighted is Gerry with the trouble-free riding he now enjoys that when he takes delivery of a Rob North BSA currently being built, it too will have a Tri-Spark system installed before a final tuning on the dyno.  For him a Tri-Spark system has become a mandatory component.

“I tried other units before I discovered the Tri-Spark system and I just wasn’t happy with them,” Gerry explained. “I like to keep maintenance on my bikes to a minimum and Tri-Spark does the trick giving me superior starting and better riding especially on the three cylinder models.”
Gerry says initially Tri-Spark was recommended by another satisfied customer. Since then, he has recommended Tri-Spark to at least three other classic bike riders.

“It’s a very easy system to install so there’s just no reason to put up with inconsistent starting, kickbacks or backfiring.” Gerry said. “I can set out on a trip knowing I can enjoy the ride without a worry.”

"I have a restored BSA A65 Lightning, originally built in May 1971.  The bike was fitted with an early electronic ignition system made by another company.  Starting was unreliable, despite checking everything many times, replacing spark plugs, stripping and re-building carburettors etc. it never seemed to improve things.  Acceleration was filled with misfires and riding the bike, with confidence was difficult.  A friend of mine who had fitted a Tri-Spark system to his Triumph T140, in response to having his ankle broken by a kick-back, recommended it highly.  

I ordered the Tri-Spark ignition unit on Monday evening and I received an e-mail the next day to advise me that delivery was likely to take up to two weeks.  The unit was with me the following Monday.  Fantastic service - thank you.

Installation could not be more straightforward.  I am sure that it can be done in less than 30 minutes - in my case it took a couple of hours because I chose to follow the excellent advice to check and tidy-up the wiring, before fitting the Tri-Spark.  Setting the ignition timing was clearly described and very easy to follow.  On my bike I had to trim 5mm off of the supplied bolt, which secures the most robust rotor to the shaft - this was anticipated, in the very clear instruction booklet. 

The initial static setting is made much easier than anything I have previously fitted by the provision of an integral LED, on the stator.  Simply line up the full advanced marker on the crankshaft, ease the stator around, until the red light comes on - brilliant.  The kit includes a good few extras, which may or may not be needed.  I used a couple of the supplied Lucar pattern connectors, these are high quality items, too; they crimp very easily to a sound joint.

The Tri-Spark unit that I bought includes the new "Test" facility.  By gently depressing a small switch on the stator, with a ball point pen and then switching on the ignition system I was able to observe the full function of the coils, leads, spark plugs etc.  When doing this I found that one plug was intermittent in its operation - bingo, another problem clearly identified and easily solved.

The lack of any additional "Box of tricks" is a real benefit with the Tri-Spark.  This is especially so, on an older British bike, where mounting electronic gadgets in a safe place can be tricky.  In my experience such gadgets usually end up rattling to destruction at some point.  The Tri-Spark simply replaces the points; the only connections being an earth to the stator securing screws, one wire to the coils and one to the ignition circuit.  Elegant design, by any standards.

My 1971 BSA A65 Lightning now starts with ease, hot or cold; idles reliably and runs beautifully.  Acceleration is crisp and strong, in any gear in any situation.  I have complete confidence in overtaking slower moving traffic and am happy to go out on lengthy trips.  I can't prove this but I reckon she runs much cooler, too. 

The Tri-Spark is undeniably dearer than some other systems but it represent significantly better value for money, as soon as you fit and use it.  I have a Triumph Trident T150V, from 1974 in the garage and that will be the next machine to receive the Tri-Spark magic."

Classic Twin Redesigned for 2013




In our efforts to maintain our reputation as a supplier of a high end system our research and development regime is rigorous. That effort has paid off and we’re pleased to say that we’ve developed what is without doubt the simplest and easiest ignition module for British twin and singles that is available on the market today. What’s more, you’ll be pleased to note, the redesign has enabled us to reduce our costs leading to a better price for you. Now they’re ready for you to order.
What’s different?
There are quite a few terrific improvements on the earlier system. And, we know that it delivers what we promise because we’ve conducted extensive testing. Apart from looking a little different, the stator unit works and fits the engine in the same way but the internals have been simplified and strengthened. What you get now is –
  • A new test mode that allows for easy testing at the press of a button, on the bike or bench.
  • Higher fault tolerance to high voltage spikes.
  • A robust module encapsulated for moisture, oil and vibration resistance using a new softer material (long exposure to water and oil is not recommended).
Tests have proved that the system is able -
  • To withstand 24 volts continuously for 10 minutes, at operating temperature.
  • To withstand up to 200 volt DC spikes on the power input.
  • To withstand reverse polarity continuously.
Some things haven’t changed. 
  • Mechanical fitting is the same.
  • Same wiring colours and connections.
  • Same ignition timing, dwell control and idle control.
  • Same coil compatibility.
  • LED for static timing and testing has been retained.
With a 3 year warranty on parts, subject to conditions, and better pricing you can’t go wrong.

New Classic Twin Test Mode

Troubleshooting an engine when the problem could be the carburettors or the ignition or a mechanical fault has been a time consuming exercise until now.

At the press of a button the Classic Twin will spark the coils for 10 seconds allowing you to check for spark at the plugs and see how the system is functioning with the coils and spark plug leads and spark plugs all working together.

A second test checks the magnetic rotor and pickups in the module thus giving a complete test of all the ignition components.

Manx GP 2012 Result

Success comes in many forms and for the Steve Robins team with rider Mark Parratt and the Tri-Spark sponsored Rocket 3 it came in the form of finishing what can only be considered an endurance race for these classic racers and placing second without any mishaps.
I would emphasise the endurance nature of this race in the following way. The four laps of the 37.7 mile circuit totalling over 150 miles are raced at an average speed of nearly 100 MPH mostly at full throttle. Mark Parratt's time was 1 hour 32 minutes 37 seconds. (Dave Madsen-Mygdal's winning time was 1:31.21.84.) Congratulations to everybody involved in making this a reality.

We get asked about coils - a lot! Customers want to know which coils will work with their electronic ignitions and we are happy to help. Each kit has a particular combination of coils that will work best and we also have coils to suit the original contact breaker ignition. The following is a guide to get started:

Red Bobber



With the cold winters in Norway, Gudvin has used his time wisely crafting this one-of-a-kind Triumph bobber based on a 1965 machine. He has the Tri-Spark Classic Twin fitted and loves the clean no black box design. The evolution continues with the addition of the Dual output coil - no wonder this machine must be the envy of Triumph fans everywhere!

He's been fine tuning the details of this very competitive racer for years now - most recently with all new electrical parts from us. Frank knows his bikes and loves to recommend  and install our ignitions for his mates in the Sydney NSW area.

2012 Manx GP entry


Update from Steve Robins:
Mark Parrett the rider and I spent the weekend at the Beezumph track days and rally in Anglesey a few weeks back, fine tuning the gearbox and other small annoyances. Mark was very pleased with the Rocket 3 now and feels the bike is a much better all-round package than it was 2011, with more attention to detail.

As usual the Tri-Spark fired the bike at the first turn of the rear wheel which is a big challenge for an ignition system with the huge porting on the R3 cylinder head and 33mm carbs, of course with such large carbs the pilot jet is almost ineffective so the ignition has to fire the bike with a huge amount of fuel from the 270 main jets and a very large volume of air passing through. Quick starting capability is of the greatest importance at the Manx GP because of the 240 Km distance covered a refuel at the half way stage is necessary, where the engine must be stopped and restarted after the refuel. Poor starting in pit lane can cost the race during this exercise.

There is a lot more competition this year in the Formula Classic race this year with six Triples entered, a few Honda 4s and at least two Norton Commandos, but even with this competition we are confident and looking forward to what we hope will be a successful two weeks at the Manx and bring home the win in the Formula Classic race again on the Tri-Spark powered BSA Rocket 3.

Negative Earth (Ground) Q & A

Q- In a recent email Bill Dawson says "the ignition seems to be wired for positive earth with the ring terminal on the red wire going to the pillar bolt for the earth connection".

A- The ignition is wired for positive earth but it will work either way by changing the connections - the wiring diagrams are supplied in the kit for both positive and negative earth.

On this subject we often get asked if the voltage regulators will work for negative earth. The single phase and the three phase regulators are made so that the case is isolated from the internal connections so they can be used on positive or negative earth machines.

We also get the odd email asking if there are any advantages to converting the machine to negative earth. The idea is that this is more common and therefore the better way to go. I feel that keeping the wiring stock is probably the better way to go - that way anyone working on the bike in the future can follow the wiring diagrams in the manuals if they need to make repairs. Either way the machine will run just the same.
